INTRODUCTION TO ANIMATION (DANM 131)

Animation Supplies

Paper:

You will need to purchase a package of 12, 5” x 8” Scratch Pads (~$20).

They are available locally at:

Office Max, 470 River Street (Item # 06128754 )

You may also order them online from Staples here.

Tape:

You will need one roll of masking tape for securing your scratch pads.

Drawing Mediums:
Purchase a variety of pens, markers, and pencils to experiment with. Remember, you will be drawing hundreds of frames so choose mediums that allow for speed.  It is important that each medium is dark enough for alignment, but does not bleed through onto previous frames. Examples of mediums that work well are soft graphite pencils (5B), charcoal pencils (the kind you can sharpen), china markers, and pens.

Storage:
You will need a hard drive to backup your work. I suggest a double backup since hard drives do occasionally stop working. A pack of DVD’s is a great way to save extra copies. Note: Files saved to the computers in the lab will be deleted when the computer is shut down at the end of the day. You can move smaller files to your home directory to prevent deletion but you should back them up on an external device as well.

Equipment:
Audio and visual equipment is available for checkout from ITS in Kerr Hall room 149 (http://its.ucsc.edu/av-checkout/index.html). A list of available equipment can be viewed under the headings “Audio Equipment Rental" and "Visual Equipment Rental” on their media equipment list. There is no charge for equipment used for an academic course. To checkout equipment students must download and print the Faculty Authorization Form and have it signed by their professor. Note: Equipment is available on a first come first serve basis, and can only be checked out for three days at a time. For this reason, it should not be depended on for completion of your final project.
